CME, Pune
About / Overview
The College of Military Engineering (CME) is a premier technical and tactical training institution of the Indian Army’s Corps of Engineers.
It provides specialized training to officers, junior commissioned officers (JCOs), enlisted personnel, as well as personnel from other branches (such as Navy, Air Force), para-military forces, police, and even civilians.
CME also trains personnel from friendly foreign countries (e.g. Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh).
Academically, it is affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for its B.Tech and M.Tech degree programs.
Its degree courses are recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
History
CME traces its roots to the School of Military Engineering (SME), which was established in 1943 at Roorkee.
After India’s independence, in 1948, the institute was moved to Dapodi, Pune.
In 1951, SME was re-designated as the College of Military Engineering to reflect its expanded role and degree-level training.
Courses & Training
CME offers a range of engineering programs:
B.Tech in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
M.Tech (postgraduate) programs.
Diploma courses (e.g., Civil Engineering, Electrical) for subordinate staff / other ranks.
Apart from academic training, CME conducts combat-engineering courses, bridging, bomb disposal, strategic camouflage, works services training, CBRN protection, etc.
It also organizes seminars, technical conferences, and research projects for professional development.
Campus & Facilities

Open-air theatre named after Major General Harkirat Singh.
Sports & Adventure: The institute encourages mountaineering, trekking, cycling, gliding, sailing, rowing, etc.
On-campus amenities: shops, post office, bank, canteen, and more.
Sustainability / Green Initiatives
CME has made a strong push towards sustainability: it has installed a 2 MW solar plant, and a 5 MW plant is under commissioning.
These solar installations significantly reduce their electricity costs and carbon footprint, contributing to the national grid. The Times of India
The campus, with its water bodies and landscaping, also supports ecological balance (flora & fauna).
Significance & Role
CME is critical to the Indian Army, especially the Corps of Engineers — providing tactical and technical training to engineer officers who are deployed for combat engineering, infrastructure, bridging, and disaster-relief tasks.
The college also advises the Army on engineering matters and is involved in research relevant to military engineering.
Through its training programs, CME builds multi-disciplinary engineers who are capable of both conventional engineering tasks and specialized military engineering roles.
